The extent of the damage to your present cord will determine whether or not i† needs replacement; with luck all you may need to repair it is a piece of electrician's tape back into place. If the rest of the cord is also damaged in any way, it's better sense in most cases to take out the old cord and put in a completely new one. A typical job on a table lamp is shown in detail in the photo sequence. ·
The flexible cords of table and floor lamps usually show the first signs of wear at the point where they emerge from the base. If there is any leeway in the wire, sometimes it can be pushed into or pulled out of its hole, taped over, and then put

Remove the shade for safekeeping; it's usually held in place with a decorative nut or stud, which unscrews readily. Following this, obviously, the bulb is removed and then actual repair work begins.

Next, snip off the old wire at the base of the lamp. Save good sections for other uses. Below right, to disassemble socket look for word "press" on shell near switch. Insert blade of small screwdriver, twist slightly, then press end of socket downward. This opens the toothed joint between the halves of lamp socket.

Next, remove old section of wire, inspect and clean socket, and tighten small screws inside shell as needed.

Next, check fit of socket and shade holder on neck of lamp; twist to right to tighten. Then, below right, feed the length of the new wire through the fixed part of the socket, down through base of the lamp.

Separate ends of new wire, remove insulation, scrape clean and tighten wires under two screws of the socket shell. Then (below right) from the bottom pull wire down carefully till socket is in position.

Now snap other section of socket back into position; start it at a slight angle and then squeeze along the bottom. Finally, protect new wire where it passes through base with ordinary white adhesive tape.
